Paper Cup Turkey's-Crafts For Children

What you'll need:

Paper or foam cup (8.5 oz)
Acrylic paint in fall colors (brown, tan, orange, red, green, yellow, etc.)
Large pom-pom for head (brown, yellow, red, orange, etc.)
Small foam heart for gobbler (to contrast with color of head)
Small foam triangle (orange or yellow)
2 small wiggle eyes
3” x 2” piece of orange construction paper
1 sheet of white construction paper
White craft glue
Scissors

How to make it:
Place cup upside down on work surface and paint brown (see image).
To make the feathers, paint the white construction paper with several fall colors, crisscrossing the colors as you go. Let dry (see image).
Cut feathers out in one large piece, should be shaped similar to a hand or crown. Cut the tips of each feather into a point (see image).
Apply glue to the bottom portion of the feathers and press onto the bottom of the cup. Hold in place for a minute or so to let the glue grab.
Place foam heart upside down so that the bumps are facing downward. Glue the foam triangle, point down, onto the upside down heart--the upper points of the triangle will be hanging over the edge. This is the beak and gobbler (see image).
Glue the pom-pom to the top of the paper cup.
Glue the wiggle eyes and the beak and gobbler to the head.
Cut two feet from the orange construction paper and glue to the bottom of the cup.

Tips:
Instead of throwing away the paper that you use to protect your work surface from paint, add more color to it to make the feathers!
The feathers can be simplified by using a piece of brown, orange, or red construction paper.

Make these even more fancy by using actual feathers and by writing the name of your dinner guests on a piece of paper and gluing to the front of each turkey.

Weather Temperature Changes

Dear Valued Resident;
With the harsh winter temperatures rapidly approaching we would like to remind you of a few tips that will help you in your apartment home.
1. Test your heat now to insure that it is in proper working order. Place the thermostat on the HEAT position/Auto at your desired temperature. NOTE: It is common to smell a strong oder the first couple times you use your heat. This will dissipate shortly. If you have any issues please contact the leasing office to have a service request placed.

2. When temperatures drop below 32 degrees you must have your heat on at all times! This is not optional as your pipes could freeze causing extensive water damage. Place the thermostat on the HEAT position/Auto at a minimum of 55 degrees to avoid frozen pipes. If you have a faucet located on an exterior wall of your apartment home it is recommended that you leave your cabinet doors open so heat can get inside to prevent the pipes from freezing. In addition you should turn your cold water on slightly so that it trickles this too will help keep the pipes from freezing. NOTE: If you have a planned winter vacation it is imperative that you DO NOT turn your heat off while you are away! It is always good to notify the management staff that you are leaving so that they can check on your pipes in your absence.

3. Lastly, if you do not have Renter’s Insurance we highly recommend that you get it! Many renters do not realize that if their personal contents, their neighbor’s person contents or the actual apartments are damaged or destroyed due to water, fire or Mother Nature that the landlords insurance does NOT cover the damages. For example: If your pipes freeze and burst causing flooding in your apartment and into a neighbor’s apartment you are then responsible for not only your repairs and replacement but also for your neighbors as well. Renter’s Insurance is very inexpensive as it typically runs around $120.00 per year. This may save you hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages if something were to happen. If your neighbor were to cause damage to your apartment home and personal renter’s insurance would cover your belongings “if” your neighbor did not have any coverage. Please protect yourself!

Have a safe and happy holiday season!

Halloween Safety Tips

As we all know, Halloween is a festive holiday for everyone. Courtney Station would like to remind all of our residents to be safe. Here are a couple of guidelines to follow while trick-or-treating:

Always use common sense.

Young children should always go trick-or-treating with an adult.

Never trick-or-treat alone. Have at least 2 buddies go with you.

Plan your entire route and make sure your family knows what it is.

Make sure that you are wearing a flame retardant costume.

Wait until you get home and your parents check your candy before you eat it.

Be very cautious of strangers.

Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house.

Be sure and say thank you for your treats.

Don't play near lit jack-o-lanterns.

Visit only houses where the lights are on.

Walk, Do not run.

Walk on sidewalks and driveways.

Cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk.

Take a cellular phone with you if possible.

Wear a watch.

Carry a flashlight.

Wicket Cupcake Recipe

These Cupcakes would be great for a themed Halloween Party. It takes 25 minutes and will be so much fun to create with family and friends:

Ingredients
Cupcakes:
1 1/2 ounces fine-quality semisweet chocolate, chopped
1/4 cups prune juice
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoons salt
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
1/3 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Frosting:
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup peanut butter (smooth or chunky)
4-ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
4 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 drop food coloring (green), optional

Chocolate wafer cookies
Licorice strips
Toasted coconut
Small candies

Special equipment: 12 (1/2-cup) muffin cups with paper liners
Directions
For the cupcakes: Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 300 degrees F. Set liners in muffin cups.

Put the chocolate and prune juice in a microwave safe bowl. Heat in the microwave on low power, stirring occasionally, until completely melted.

Whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. In another bowl, beat the egg and yolk with an electric hand mixer at high speed until slightly thick and lemon colored, about 3 minutes. Slowly add buttermilk, oil, vanilla, and melted chocolate mixture to eggs, beating until thoroughly combined. Add the flour mixture and beat until just combined.

Divide the batter among muffin tins, filling them 1/2 of the way. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cupcakes comes out clean and the tops spring back when pressed gently, about 25 minutes. Cool the cupcakes in the tin on a rack for 10 minutes then remove from the tin and cool completely.

For the frosting: Beat the butter, peanut butter, and cream cheese in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Gradually add the confectioners' sugar and milk mixing until the frosting is smooth. Add food coloring as desired. Refrigerate the frosting until firm.

To decorate the cakes: For the witches hat, score a circle in the middle of a cupcake. Cut a deep cone-like shape with a knife held at an angle. Rotate the cupcake to complete the circle and remove the center. Repeat with all the cupcakes. Generously scoop or pipe enough frosting into the center of each cupcake to fill the hole and to come over the cake to make a face. Top with a chocolate wafer cookie. Put a dot of frosting in the middle of the wafer cookie and invert the cone shaped piece of cake on top to make a witches hat. Use skinny licorice, toasted coconut or cereal flakes for hair and candies for eyes and/or nose. Refrigerate for up to 30 minutes before serving.

Warrior Workout

Want to build a soldier’s body without the fatigues? Follow these tips supplied by two of Fort Stewart’s finest.

Fitness and health are often the primary lines of defense for Fort Stewart’s 3rd Infantry Division combat soldiers. Peak levels of strength and endurance can mean the difference between life and death, success or failure. It’s no surprise then that Sergeants 1st class Jeremy St. Julian and Robert Frankforter take their training very seriously. “Physical fitness is our second highest priority,” said Frankforter. “Second only to training.”

Early every morning, St. Julian and Frankforter motivate and move hundreds of soldiers through rigorous exercise regimens specially designed to keep the world’s toughest troopers in peak physical condition. Luckily for those of us with less fight in us than flab, these two soldiers took a break from their rigorous regimes to let The South in on some if their training sessions’ best exercising secrets. Follow these tips and you’ll be in combat condition in no time.

Push-ups: According to St. Julian, stabilization and alignment are key to maximizing the benefits of this tried and true exercise which works the entire upper body, back and core. “Place your arms shoulder width [apart] underneath your body and keep a straight line from your heels to shoulders. Lower down until your elbows are at a 90 degree angle,” he advises. He suggests beginners start with a few repetitions of 15–20, although his soldiers are pushed through 200-300 during a single training session.

Mountain Climber: “With this one, you work everything from the chest down and you also get some cardiovascular effects,” explains St. Julian. Start in the push-up position with your hands under your shoulders and squeeze one knee up toward your chest. Lightly jump and switch the positions of your feet. Repeat until muscles are fatigued.

Jumping Jacks: The Army’s most notorious exercise is still a fitness favorite among Fort Stewart soldiers. “It’s a good cardiovascular exercise,” says St. Julian. Whether a run or a strength training session follows, the sergeant gets soldiers’ blood rushing with at least 50 jumping jacks.

Five Beers for an Authentic Oktoberfest

Five Beers for an Authentic Oktoberfest: Wolfgang Ban and Eduard Frauneder

1. Altenmünster
"One of the most beautiful regions in Germany is the Allgäu, home of Altenmünster Brewer’s Beer. The Allgäu is a land of lush, green meadows, hills and lakes that give way to a majestic mountain backdrop. Altenmünster is made from rediscovered recipes and uses long-forgotten ingredients to create a full-flavored and timeless beer. With a sweet and smooth malt body, Altenmünster is the ideal companion for spicy Gulasch, Kässpatzen, ox roast, German dumplings and hearty boar dishes."

2. Clausthaler
"Clausthaler has been the undisputed champion among non-alcoholic brews in Germany since its inception. Clausthaler is among Germany's leading export beverage brands and is regarded the world's best non-alcoholic brew. A major reason for this outstanding product quality is the unique (and patented) Clausthaler brewing process, which allows the brewmaster to prevent the formation of alcohol, rather than removing the alcohol after the brewing process. How does Clausthaler do it? Top secret … but it pairs well with white meats and fresh seafood."

3. Schlösser
"Brewed in the unmistakable Düsseldorf style, Schlösser has a distinctive fresh and spicy taste. A standard everyday drink in the Lower Rhine region, the strong malty ale finishes with a fine bitter taste of hops. The amber and copper color and spicy freshness pairs perfectly with hearty foods such as roasted pork, smoked sausage or potato pancakes with applesauce and cherry crepes."

4. Hövels
"Hövels is Hövels: it’s completely unique and cannot be categorized as any one type of beer. Brewed in Dortmund, one of Germany’s most traditional brewing regions, Hövels has been a great success since 1893. The beer uses four different fine malts and a traditional mashing process to make an amber-colored beer that has undertones of caramel, bread and dark raisin-y fruits. The caramel notes and mellow taste are ideal for meat dishes as well as starters, like wild mushrooms, and even goes well with sweet desserts."

5. Schöfferhofer
"Fankfurt am Main, commonly known as Frankfurt, is the home of the fine Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen. A top-fermented, full-bodied beer with a distinctive and slightly sweet, floral aroma, Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen is one of Germany’s most well-known wheat beers. The cloudy wheat beer has a smooth malt background and rich yeast flavor with a zesty lemon crispness. This tangy, dry beer is best paired with lighter foods such as sushi, salads, seafoods and, of course, the classic Weisswurst."

History of Labor Day

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 6 in 2010).

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.[1] It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.[2] The September date was chosen as Cleveland was concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair.[3] All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

In U.S. sports, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day. The Southern 500 NASCAR auto race was held that day from 1950 to 2004.

Are you prepared for Hurricane Season?

Hurricanes are violent storms, which can bring intense winds, heavy rain, a storm surge, floods, coastal erosion, landslides and tornadoes. The season for Hurricanes runs from June-November, most typically occur mid-August to late October. Each season, on average, six hurricanes form in the Atlantic Ocean of which two become major hurricanes.

You should know what to do, to help you prepare for a hurricane. Be sure to:

*Contact your local emergency management office to learn about evacuation routes & emergency plans
*Buy flood insurance. If flooded and do not have insurance, there is a 30-day waiting period before coverage is activated. www.floodsmart.gov
*Find out what your child's emergency procedure is at school and for your workplace.
*Make a family disaster plan. Be sure to have close friends & relatives contact information.
*Put together a Disaster Supply Kit with food, water, medical supplies, battery-powered radio & NOAA Weather Radio all Hazards, batteries, flashlights and other items that will allow you to get by for 3 days after a hurricane hits.
*Be sure to gather important documents such as birth and marriage certificates, social security cards, passports, wills, deeds and financial and insurance records. Store them in a fire & flood safe location or safe deposit box.

As the storm approaches:

*Remember that a "Hurricane Watch" means the onset of hurricane conditions is possible within 36 hours; a "Hurricane Warning" means the onset of hurricane conditions is likely within 24 hours.
*Have a full tank of gas in a vehicle, cash and your disaster supplies kit ready to go.
*Make sure every family member has their identification on them.
*Turn the fridge on the coldest temperature and keep it closed.
*Fill the bathtub & other large containers with water for bathing, flushing toilets and cleaning---DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER

Improve Athletic Performance with Yoga

1|2 PREV | More Yoga Techniques
By Alla Byrne
Whether you're new to yoga or looking to power up your routine, we have pointers to make your practice thrive. Gwen Lawrence works with a variety of professional athletes, including star players from the New York Giants and Yankees, to help them improve their performance. Find out how yoga can take your workout to the next level.

Q: Can you talk about the benefits of yoga for athletes?

A: It's definitely going to reduce the incidents of injury because any time your joints are more mobile and free and not as stiff, it's going to put less pressure on them. It not only works their flexibility and strength, which equal power, but their focus, concentration, and breathing techniques. It trains them to open up their lungs and breathe, so they have more lung capacity and can stay on the field a little bit longer.

Q: Why is proper breathing so important in yoga?

A: You really need to oxygenate the body to feed and bring enough blood to the muscles. Training my clients to breathe in and out through the nose is of number one importance. I recommend doing nasal rinses with Afrin PureSea to keep the respiratory tract very clear and open.

Q: What should people look for in a yoga studio or teacher?

A: You want to look for a teacher who has at least 200 hours of training. You can go to YogaAlliance.org and look through their registry. Then you know it's a properly trained teacher, because there are a lot of weekend certifications out these days, which is bad news.

Q: : Are there easy ways for people to practice yoga at home?

A: I think if you're just starting, it's a good idea to practice with a teacher a few times. Then you can investigate on the Internet. There are also great videos out there that you can use at home. I think home practice is probably the most successful. Just sneak it in there whenever you can.

Q: Do you have a favorite pose you can recommend?

A: Pigeon pose is a great one because it releases deep hip and hip flexor tension. Hips are the storage depot for stress, trauma, fear and anxiety from childhood. It's a big release to get into some deep hip openers. Plus, it's a safe and comfortable pose.
