Recycling Opportunities for Earth Week Coastal Bank and Savannah Tech sponsor Earth Day events April 15, 2011 - Two local institution are doing their part in helping maintain a clean and healthy environment in honor of Earth Day.
The Coastal Bank, a locally owned and operated community bank headquartered in Savannah, will accept electronic items for recycling, free of charge, at all area branches and at the bank's operations center in Pooler from April 18-22, 2011 in honor of Earth Week. The electronics recycling program is offered in partnership with Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc.
"As a community bank, we're always interested in ways to make a positive impact on a local level," said Jim LaHaise, executive vice president and chief banking officer at The Coastal Bank. "This is a wonderful partnership which helps celebrate Earth Week, offers hands-on training for those in need at Goodwill and reduces the negative effect that electronic items can have on the environment. We encourage everyone to recycle their unwanted electronics by dropping them off at the nearest Coastal Bank location."
The Coastal Bank will accept a wide range of used electronic items including computers, cell phones and household appliances at the following locations April 18-22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.:
• 18 West Bryan St., Savannah
• 412 Stephenson Ave., Savannah
• 501 West Highway 80, Pooler
• 605 West Highway 80, Pooler (operations center)
• 140 Towne Center Blvd, Pooler
• 5799 Highway 21 South, Rincon
• 101 West Hendry St., Hinesville
Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc. works with the Dell Reconnect program to create an audited waste stream, ensuring that unwanted computers are properly recycled to minimize their environmental impact.
"Our mission is to assist people with disabilities and other barriers to employment to live independently and become employed," said Steven Bellmoff, special projects manager for Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc. "Our people strip down the computers, take out the power supplies and comply with the Dell Reconnect program requirements. We feel a strong sense of pride and responsibility to the community and to the environment. We're delighted to partner with The Coastal Bank on this important initiative."
Also, Savannah Technical College will partner with Huntingdon Restoration, Inc. in a battery recycling effort for Earth Day. The college will serve as a drop-off location for car batteries and smaller on Friday, April 22 from 8 a.m. - noon in the rear parking lot of the Savannah Campus, 5717 White Bluff Road.
